The History of Honda

Honda Cars



Honda Motor Co Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturing company that manufactures engines, cars, and motorcycles along with a whole host of other products. Honda is currently the largest engine manufacturer in the world.



Soichiro Honda was a mechanic who developed his own design for piston rings. He eventually perfected the design and his newly formed company contracted with Toyota to supply piston rings. The new company was destroyed during the Second World War.



Honda used what few resources he had left to create a new company that focused on fitting engines to bicycles in order to create some mode of transportation in Japan after the war had ended.



In 1948 the Honda Motor Co. was founded and Soichiro began to produce scooters and motorcycles. The company experienced great successes and continued to produce many popular scooters and motorcycles during the 1950s.



The American Honda Co. was founded in 1958 and began a long stretch in American automobile history. Honda is the largest motorcycle producer in the world and has been for some time.



Honda began developing prototypes for cars during the 1960s. The first prototype was a small pick-up, and months later Japan introduced a a two-door roadster, the S500. Honda was one of the only small car manufacturers to succeed independently without being forced to merge with larger Japanese manufacturers.



Honda has been manufacturing cars successfully in the United States since 1972 with the introduction of the Honda Civic. Honda has manufacturing plants scattered throughout the United States with future plants in the planning stages.



In 1986 Honda was the first manufacturer to create a separate line of luxury vehicles, known as Acura. The company was also the first to introduce a passenger vehicle with four-wheel steering; this was the 1987 Honda Prelude, and the Honda Legend received an SRS airbag this same year.



Honda has been well-recognized through the years for its ability to adapt and survive in a market that is wrought with change. Honda has been able to adapt to market trends and to implement necessary innovations in order to stay competitive. In 2003 Honda began an aggressive marketing campaign targeting UK buyers. Honda is an internationally recognized and respected company. Some of Honda’s current popular models include the FR-V, Accord, Civic, CRV, Jazz, NSX, Legend, and the S2000.



The Honda FR-V is a compact MPV that seats six. The FR-V is the only current MPV that provides a 3+3 seating arrangement available on the European market. The FR-V comes with a choice of three engines, two petrol and one diesel option. The car has been produced from 2004 to the present.



The Honda Accord is a compact hatchback. The Accord four-door was first produced in 1977. Currently, Honda is producing its seventh generation of Accord. The current generation is available in four-door. The car comes with either a 4- cylinder or 6-cylinder engine. The seventh generation will be produced from 2003 to 2007.



The Honda Civic is a subcompact car that was produced from 1972 to 2000. It replaced the Honda Z360. In 2001 the seventh generation Civic was introduced and was available as a two-door coupe, three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, or as a five-door hatchback. The seventh generation Civic was in production until 2005. The eighth generation Civic began production in 2006, the newest generation has received many interior and exterior enhancements. The car also offers a more powerful engine than its predecessor and is also offered in hybrid form. The Civic comes in three trim levels and engine choices depend on geographical location.



The Honda CRV is a compact cross-over SUV. The four-door SUV is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, it is only offered in all-wheel drive in the United Kingdom. The first generation CRV was produced from 1996 to 2001. In 1999, the CRV was updated and received a more powerful engine. The second generation CRV debuted from 2001 to 2006 and had been completely redesigned and came with higher levels of trim. The CRV also featured three choices of engines including a turbo-diesel model. The third generation of CRV was first produced in 2007 to the present. It received Honda’s standard 2.4-litre 2-cylinder engine with a 2.2-litre i-CDTI diesel option being offered in Europe. The new CRV comes with either a five-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission.



The Honda Jazz is a five-door hatchback. The Honda Jazz replaced the Honda Logo and was first produced in 2001. The Honda Jazz supermini comes with two engine choices and several levels of trim. Production of the Honda Jazz continues to date.



The Honda NSX is a sports car in the form of a two-door coupe. The NSX comes with either a 3.0-litre V6 or a 3.2-litre V6. The NSX comes with rear-wheel drive, an all-aluminium chassis, body and suspension. The NSX received a number of exterior enhancements in 2002. The car began production in 1990 and production stopped in 2005.



The Honda Legend is a mid-size luxury car or an executive car. It can be purchased as a four-door sedan or as a two-door coupe. The Honda legend has been produced from 1985 to the present.



The Honda S2000 is a roadster designed to celebrate and mark the company’s 50th anniversary. The S2000 features a front engine with rear-wheel drive. The car replaced the Honda S800. The S200 was first produced in 1999, and production continues to the present.
